Gun: Walther PPK/S Manufacturer: Manurhin (note: parts made by Manurhin in France and assembled in Ulm, West Germany, are more plentiful) Chambering.380 ACP (9 mm Kurz) Serial No: 252XXXS. I know Smith acquired Walther a little while back, but it was only when I really noticed the gun's serial number that it got me curious about it. The right side of the slide says 'Walther USA, LLC' and beneath that 'Springfield, MA'. The serial number is '9800AAA'. I have never seen a serial number end in 3 letters, let alone three of the same.
The Walther PPK (Polizei Pistole Kriminal) was produced since 1930. It was developed for a hidden carriage. The engineers from Walther reduced the length, width and weight. The main difference to the PP is the frame with no back strap. this function was integrated in a single molded Grip. Also the grip was shortened, so the clip has only a capacity of 7 rounds. The shortness was balanced with a magazine-shoe on the bottom.
From 1978 to 1999, USA Walther PPK/S were manufactured by Ranger Manufacturing in Gadsden Alabama and distributed by Interarms. S prefix serial number, indicates an Interarms, 'Under License of', 'Made in USA' (Ranger Mfg) Stainless PPK/s in.380 edited to update serial numbers. The PPK was determined to be too short in the grip to pass the size standard, so Walther took the shorter PPK slide and barrel, and mounted them on the longer PP frame. This was known as the PPK/s. The PP with it's longer grip and magazine holds 7 rounds in the magazine.
The PPK and the PP were also produced very successfully after war. Even James Bond had an Walther PPK.
